Contemporary Sally Bowles

I really wanted to produce a video to enable me to perfectly capture my perception of Sally in a contemporary form. This video, I shot and edited myself and I am very pleased with the outcome. When I heard this song, I instantly thought it would be perfect as the background song to this design.

My contemporary Sally Bowels design comes from the scene where we first meet her. Instantly we see the impression she leaves on the two men. She is charming and flirtatious and openly speaks about her passionate love making. I wanted to portray these aspect of her personality with how she holds herself and her movements. I have focused on hand movements, and intense looks with a mesmerising blink and have purposely slowed down various shots of her blinking to create emphasise of the glances. The hand movement shots are also altered to help create emphasis on capturing her famous green nails. The music adds to the sensuality of the video, making her more sexually appealing, making men lust over her and her vulnerable self.

With contrast to this attraction she holds, we also understand that she has just come from a night spent with a lover, so there is potential that she still has drugs and alcohol in her system. To create this idea, I asked my model to move with a slight stumble in her step and to roll her head around, showing her confused and tranced state of mind. The focus of the camera going in and out was done deliberately to imitate her blurred drunken vision, but also to represent her misconceptions on things. This suggests her naivety and vulnerability as a young women, doing certain things that put her at a risk. Again with the editing of the filming using varied speeds, this is to symbolise her changing moods; her hyperactive, upbeat moments, contrasting with her down and dark thoughts. I have also used a black backdrop, not only to compliment the make-up and hair, but to reflect her inner sadness.

As a whole, I wanted to present my contemporary Sally Bowles in a darker and more graphic light to show how I believe she really feels in this particular scene. I wanted to show a confusion between lust and love, and excessive drugs and reality; the reall depth of Sally.
